Why Franklin Richards is so important in the MCU’s Fantastic Four

It’s been unclear why Galactus chooses Earth as his next planet to devour in theMCU’s Fantastic Four movie. Now, it’s clear that it has something to do with Franklin Richards.

In one of the clips released ahead of the new film, theSilver Surferwarns the titular team that their planet has been “marked for death… your world will be consumed by the Devourer. There is nothing you can do to stop him, for he is a universal force as essential as the stars.”

“Hold your loved ones close and speak the words you’ve been afraid to speak… I herald his beginning, I herald your end, I heraldGalactus,” she adds.

So, does he just pick galaxies and worlds at random, or does he have another agenda with Earth? According to a new teaser, it seems like the latter is more accurate.

Who is Franklin Richards?

Franklin Richards is the son of Reed Richards and Sue Storm, and he has extraordinary abilities that put him on a par with the likes of the Celestials and Dr Manhattan from Watchmen.

More specifically, he can warp reality and rearrange the molecular structure of matter and energy at will, create pocket universes, use telepathy, telekinesis, and astral projection, and it’s believed he may be immortal.

It’s easy to see why Galactus would want him, and if anything, it may be a benefit to the rest of existence across the cosmos. If Franklin can create pocket universes, Galactus could devour them – it’d be like having a cosmic home chef.

It remains to be seen how much of his story in the comics will be adapted in the MCU. However, given the leaked Fantastic Four post-credits scene and the upcomingAvengers: Doomsday, he could be a major player in the future of the franchise.

Also, in an earlier interview withEmpire, Kirby delivered an exciting tease when asked how the titular team can take on a villain of Galactus’ caliber. “It’s not just adults that have superpowers,” she said.
