Square Enix has broughtTriangle Strategyback to the Nintendo eShop after a brief delisting. The game is now available once again for Nintendo Switch owners to buy through the virtual store after a month and a few days of it being delisted from the eShop.

A Retro-Inspired Strategy RPG

Octopath Traveler is a strategy RPG developed bySquare Enix’s Team Asano and originally released exclusively on Nintendo Switch in 2022. The game was later ported to PC in the same year and received a Meta Quest VR version in 2024.

A heartbreaking lover’s tale that has a tragic end.

In the game, players assume the role of Serenoa, a young man from House Wolffort. As he sees himself in the middle of a big conspiracy, he must take the mantle from his father and lead his people during turbulent times. With allies whose personal allegiances and values differ, it’s up to the player to learn more about them and attempt to reach a consensus that agrees with their side.

Gameplay-wise, the experience is a tactical game along the lines of Final Fantasy Tactics and other classics. Players must command various units in turn-based combat to deal with challenging maps featuring multiple foes. Making the most of the terrain attributes is one of the strategic elements that players must keep in mind for their turns and those of the enemies. One such element is magic, with the possibility to enhance their power thanks to where the enemy is currently standing.

Like other recent games by Team Asano, one of the game’s biggest highlights was the HD-2D graphics, which makes the game feel retro despite being a new release. The title was highly praised for its intricate world and player choice. Our ownreviewby Chris Shive pointed to the game as an enjoyable tactical experience despite a few hiccups, especially on the pacing.

Not the First Case

While this situation is atypical, it’s not the first time that a Square Enix game has been delisted from the Switch virtual store and came back later. The same has previously happened to the firstOctopath Traveler, which was originally released on Switch in 2018.

In the case of Octopath Traveler, the game was originally published by Nintendo in the west due to a partnership agreement between the company and Square Enix. Back in March 2024, the game was taken down from the store and returned with a small difference. Instead of Nintendo, Square Enix was listed as the publisher going forward.

The same happened to Triangle Strategy, which now has Square Enix as its publisher despite being originally released by Nintendo. Due to the similar circumstances between the two cases, players had already been expecting this change to be the reason behind the temporary delisting.

With this reason in mind, it’s interesting to note that there are other fruits from the partnership that have yet to be migrated between the publishers. The list includesLIVE A LIVE,Bravely Default 2, The World Ends with You: Final Remix and Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age. All of those still have Nintendo as the publisher and could face the same temporary delisting and ownership change in the future.
