One of the most common trends among trading card games is to come out with exclusive box sets and bonus goods outside of packs and decks. The Digimon Card Game is no different with their most recent set known as Draconic Roar coinciding with the release of the Digimon Card Game Gift Box for 2022. This is the second Gift Box to have been released with last year’s featuring the EX-1 Classic Collection cards along with some extra little bonuses. With our hands finally on the Gift Box for 2022, let’s get right into what all it has to offer.

Before we go into specific details on every little thing we want to quickly go over what exactly this box is worth and what all it includes. The 2022 Gift Box retails for $29.99 in the US and can be found at various stores both large or small depending on individual location or online where applicable. Other regions will vary in price and availability. The set includes five packs of the latest set known as EX-3 Draconic Roar, a 2022 Lucky Pack promo card, an acrylic sheet filled with small tokens and two memory gauges. For those who are only after cards, the price here isn’t the best for just five packs, but it’s all the bonus little extras that help fill out whether or not the price is right.

First things first is the acrylic sheet is the big draw of this Gift Box. This includes a little acrylic figure featuring two Digimon and can be one of four different variations. The combinations include Gabumon with Agumon, Guilmon with Impmon, Flamemon with Strabimon and Veemon with Wormon. These come alongside a variety of little card tokens that can be used while playing to signify when there’s an effect in play such as a Digimon who gets an extra security attack or skill that both players should be aware of. The acrylic sheet itself is nicely made with it all put together with a somewhat sticky back holding everything together. Each acrylic piece is easily removable with them being able to pop out if pressed from behind or the plastic sheet can be gently peeled off to then remove each individual piece. There’s some small assembly required for the acrylic figure itself, but it simply pops into place on the base with no trouble. The acrylic figure stands about 4 inches (10cm) high with the Digimon names printed cleanly at the bottom along with wonderful prints of the two Digimon themselves. While it can make for simply a cool display item, it can also be used as a memory gauge marker with an arrow featured on it indicated where the memory currently is. It’d probably be too large to use practically, but it’s a nice option for those enjoying playing casually together. The rest of the acrylic markers are small as they’re intended to be placed on cards, but those who want to use them will need to find a good way to keep them stored. They too are nice quality with colors and small details making them fun to look at.

The memory gauge is standard large size with the other gauges that have been made available. Although the material used does seem flimsier with no metal backing, the front is still vibrantly colored and looks great. The Digimon featured on them are the same seen on the acrylic stands with one of each pair on either side of the red and blue gauges. The acrylic marker the set comes with also rests well on top with the clear bottom making it apparently where the memory is currently at, so it’s perfect for play whether this particular memory gauge is used or if players opt to use it with another large memory gauge. The acrylic marker itself of course won’t work as well with the smaller memory gauges, such as those included with decks, just due to the nature of the larger size.

As for the cards themselves as mentioned prior this Gift Box includes five packs of Draconic Roar and one bonus promo card. The promo card can be one of four different previously released cards, with our particular pull being WereGarurumon. Although technically each card has been released before, each one has a new shimmer and holographic change in addition to a special border color. It’s a small inclusion, but does help make them feel more unique for those who may already have a few of these cards. The artwork itself also seems slightly altered in color, as comparing the old and new WereGarurumon cards showed that the newer print had more emphasis on blue coloring than the original. As for the pulls themselves this will obviously vary from person to person, but I managed to get both a Super Rare and Secret Rare card, with the Secret Rare being an alternate art version as well. It’s possible that two Super Rares minimum are guaranteed per box, but without proper confirmation, obviously individual pulls will be luck of the draw as per usual. While it’s just a small tease of the set, the artwork is lovely across the board for all the cards and I found myself particularly fond of the common SnowAgumon artwork.

For around $30 this box set is not for those looking to just pick up a few packs of cards to start off the Draconic Roar set. The 2022 Digimon Gift Box is for those who want the extra acrylic sheet items with the bonus being a decent amount of cards and of course the bonus memory gauge. The same could be said of last year’s Gift Box which included a special Digivice themed memory token alongside the EX-1 set of cards. While personally I found it to be worth it for myself, it’s made in mind for the super fans of Digimon, or as the box implies, a gift for someone just starting to get into the card game and looking for extra little goodies for their collection. Still, the Gift Box is adorable and honestly one of the coolest most unique box sets they’ve released so far and hopefully we continue to see even more into next year as well.
