As part of their GDC postmortem on the development of brilliantSoulsborneinspired sidescrollerSalt & Sanctuary, developer Ska Studios detailed a wonderful explanation of what went into the game’s creation. The post can be foundin its entirety on the Playstation Blogand we highly recommend a full read.

The game featured more than 600weapons,armorpieces,spells, anditemsand took the 2 person husband and wife team of James and Michelle years to put it all together. To look back at the game now and see what 2 people have accomplished, we can see just how amazing an accomplishment this was, given the quality of the game (we scored it with supremely high marks inour review!).

The post walks us through the process from concept and origins and into coding and tools and the challenges of working with your spouse, being an indie developer and creating a Souls-like while also retaining your own creative identity. It finishes off with a promise to patient Vita owners that the port is still on its way

Definitely worth the reading time to get a peek into the window of game development and the people behind it. Congratulations to Ska Studios on all of their success!
