The main plot ofMea Culpahinges on high-profile artist Zyair Malloy allegedly murdering his girlfriend, Hydie. The existing evidence points to the fact that Zyair is guilty of the crime, with his former girlfriend’s blood being found in his apartment with fragments of her skull and DNA embedded in one of Zyair’s paintings. However, Hydie’s body is never found. Mea, although conflicted due to Zyair being prosecuted by her brother-in-law Ray Harper, decides to take on the case. The film establishes that her determination to defend Zyair arises partly owing to the overbearing nature of her in-laws.
Despite the seemingly damning evidence against Zyair, Mea does all she can to prove his innocence. The fact that she’s attracted to and subsequently begins an intimate relationship with the painter also leads viewers to assume that Mea will succeed in proving the painter innocent. However, plans come crashing down when Mea learns that she’s just one of a plethora of women that Zyair has used the same seduction technique on. The immediate question that viewers are plagued with upon the shock revelation that Hydie is alive and well centers on why Zyair was falsely accused of murder. Soon after she attempts to confront Hydie, during which she loses her phone, Mea gets in touch with Ray and reveals that Hydie is alive and Zyair is innocent. It is within this unsettled atmosphere that Mea, via a phone call and email with her friend Jimmy, learns that Azalia faked her cancer.

An even more horrifying truth then reveals itself. Walking into a small room illuminated in red, Mea comes across Zyair’s paintings. The paintings she finds are similar to the one that the artist did of Mea herself and hung on the canopy above his bed. Peeling the first layer away, Mea finds a portrait of her friend Charlise. It is an appalled and thoroughly confused Mea that meets the rest of the family.
Mea’s discovery ultimately leads to the actual truth. Zyair was framed for Hydie’s murder by her husband’s family.The big conspiracywas concocted due to the fact that Charlise had an affair with Zyair. Ray, in his ambitions to become the mayor, intended to win votes through his prosecution of an alleged murderer. Azalia fully supports her son’s endeavor, even to the extent of faking cancer to gain sympathy votes, a fact that Kal is apparently in the dark about.
However, Kal is not entirely innocent in the plan. He is aware of his family’s plans and aids them in working against Mea, a fact that Mea learns when he fakes a 911 call to his brother. Zyair Malloy is merely a pawn in Ray’s game, an unfortunate victim who was guilty only of sleeping with the wrong woman.

At the end of Mea’s violent confrontation with her in-laws, three people wind up dead. Charlise is stabbed, Azalia is thrown off the hood of a car, and Kal is thrown out of the vehicle when Mea manages to swerve, making their vehicle collide with an oncoming truck. Later, based on evidence received through an anonymous email, the mastermind of the plot, Ray, is arrested. With hisinnocence now proven, Zyair Malloy is also set free.

Although Zyair thanks Mea for revealing the truth and asks to meet, Mea ignores the message, throwing away her phone and walking away. The ending of the film is perhaps apt. With ‘mea culpa’ meaning ‘through my fault,’ Mea may have realized that her pain was partly because she gave into her desires regarding Zyair.
