Back in September, we reported that Sony Pictures Television is developing a spinoff of the beloved 1990s sitcomMarried with Children, which would starDavid Faustinoas Bud Bundy, who is grown up with a family of his own. We haven’t heard anything regarding the spinoff since then, but,E! Onlinecaught up with originalMarried With ChildrenstarsDavid FaustinoandChristina Applegate, who confirmed that theMarried…With Children Spinoffis in the works. Here’s whatDavid Faustinohad to say.
“Sony has it. They’re excited about it. They’re working out some legal issues that we hope they work out. The whole cast, including Christina, is down to do little bits in it. The idea would be a pilot for a spinoff. That’s all I can say right now. It involves me and few other people.”
Ironically, the news was broke during thered carpetpremiere ofChristina Applegate’sVacation, which follows a premise similar to theMarried with Childrenspinoff.Ed Helmsstars as the grown-up Rusty Griswold from the originalVacationmovies, who re-creates his childhood road trip to Walley World with his own family.Christina Applegate, who played Bud Bundy’s sister Kelly in the originalMarried with Children, plays Rusty’s wife in thecomedy movie, which opens in theaters today. The actress also revealed at the premiere that the entireMarried with Childrencast, includingEd O’Neill,Katey Sagal, Amanda Bearse, Ted McGinley and David Garrison, would reprise their roles for thisnew TV series.
“All of us have said we would all be there for [Faustino]. Kelly Bundy probably has like 10 kids. I’m sure of it.”
If thisMarried with Childrenspinoff does move forward, it certainly won’t be the first show to tackle this hybrid reboot/spinoff format. Disney Channel’sGirl Meets Worldis a continuation of the 1990s sitcom Boy Meets World, following the main characters as adults, raising their own family. Other upcoming shows like Netflix’sFuller House, NBC’sCoachandHeroes Rebornand Showtime’sTwin Peaksare all set several years, if not decades, after the original programs went off the air. And the idea is hardly new. Classic sitcomsThe Brady BunchandLeave It to Beaveralso returned to the airwaves with tier original casts in tact for a look at who everyone grew up.
It isn’t known if Sony has brought in writers already to develop this new version ofMarried with Children, which was originally created by Michael G. Moye and Ron Leavitt. There is no indication yet whether or not Ron Leavitt is involved, but Ron Leavitt passed away in 2008. Are you looking forward to a new version ofMarried with Children?
