Learn When You Can Attack

Not every monster will make using the Great Sword an easy task.

The Great Sword is one of the slowest weapons in the Monster Hunter series. It has long-winding attacks that can be charged to deal even greater damage and requires precision timing to land hits before a monster starts attacking. The key part is using the Guard or Rising Slash abilities. When monsters are put on pressure, they will allow you to create an opening. When performing a Perfect Guard, you can clash with a monster and force it back, knocking it to the ground and allowing you to hit it with some heavy attacks. The same can be done with a well-placed Rising Slash attack. This attack can be charged and is perfect for taking down a monster charging forward with a melee attack.

Another solid tool to use while under pressure is the Tackle attack, which can be used while you queue up a charged attack. Tackle will give you super armor to push through a monster attack that would otherwise knock you backward while also allowing you not to be stunned by a monster’s roar. You will still take some damage from an attack, but you won’t be in an unsafe spot if you time it with the correct attacks coming your way. Here you have some solid defensive options for an otherwise slow weapon that can be tough to use at first. Sometimes the best answer is to create your opening with Guard or Rising Slash as well as push through an attack phase with your Tackle.

Great Sword Tips and Tricks

While the Great Sword doesn’t have many combos, it does have some solid tricks at its disposal.

One thing that may pose a problem for beginners is the direction you face while charging your weapon attacks. The Overhead Slash attack has several variations that can be charged several levels before being unleashed on the monster. This is where you can use Focus Mode to change where you are facing if the monster ends up behind you or off to the side. Another bonus attack you can use in Focus Mode is the Focus Slash: Perforate attack. This attack will break a monster’s wound easily and quickly while giving you some crafting materials for gear and weapons.

Something that should always be in the back of your mind after using Focus Slash: Perforate is that there is a deceptively long reach to the Great Sword. Once you’ve used Focus Slash: Perforate, you can follow up with a Charged Slash attack from where the animation stops, and the Charged Slash will still reach the monster. The Great Sword isn’t a combo-heavy weapon like some of the others. The weapon only has a few combos to remember and three of them are displayed in the training area, giving you a solid foundation to build on while you begin hunting.
