I used to walk around this part of town, because I wanted to come here, until she fell asleep; then I’d run in here and sit here with one cold coffee for two hours at a time and write, just write like fury. A lot of the [first] book, in fact the whole of Chapter 10 is written in here.

Called the Nicholas Cafè, the quaint shop in Edinburgh held many memories for the author in her early days as a divorced, single mother who wastrying to make it in the literary world. However, that dream came crashing down soon after the publication of the first novel:

But I don’t tend to write in here so much anymore because I feel a bit too self-conscious about it. I feel as though, because I’ve given interviews in here, it’s as though I’m advertising this is where I write. So I don’t tend to work in here so much anymore.
