InElden Ring’sexpansive DLC expansion,Shadow of the Erdtree, it’s hard to decipher if you are moving in the right direction. Mainly because the game never really tells you where to go, what to do in what order and never really highlights which areas host mandatory bosses linked to progression. But I suppose that’s what makesElden Ringso special, because with this open-world format, you are free to explore and make natural discoveries at your own pace.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree: How to Get to the Abyssal Woods

Shadow of the Erdtree is full of secrets, and there’s no area that’s more shrouded in mystery than the Abyssal Woods.

For example, you may think that the Darklight Catacombs is just another routine dungeon to clear before heading back to the surface, but in fact, this is an area that leads to a mandatory boss battle needed to gain access to the Abyssal Woods, a key area tied to progression in this DLC. The only problem is, you’ll need to face off against Jori, Elder Inquisitor, if you want to pass on through, and let’s just say, they aren’t going to let you slip on through without a fight. But in this guide, we’ll do our best to make this fight as easy for you as possible.

Where is Jori, Elder Inquisitor In Shadow of the Erdtree?

As mentioned, Jori, Elder Inquisitor is found in the Darklight Catacombs, which is an area found in the southern region of the Recluse River. To get down to the Recluse River, you will need to explore the drained Church District and make your way down to the Castle Watering Hole, then travel south along the river until you reach the Darklight Catacombs.

This area is a dungeon with a gimmick that is a literal interpretation of the area’s name. The player will need to work their way through three different floors where each area is almost pitch black, and need to find a lever to turn the lights on. In truth, you’re able to pretty much ignore this puzzling aspect of this catacomb if you have aLantern, so if you don’t, take the time to go and get it.

How To Prepare For The Fight

Jori, Elder Inquisitor, is a boss who relies mainly on holy damage and projectiles during this fight. So having theHaligdrake Talisman +2equipped is pretty much a non-negotiable here. You can also equip theDragoncrest Shield Talisman +2Talisman as well, but considering they tend to teleport rather than get caught up in a melee fight with you, it’s rare that you’ll actually have to worry about piercing damage in this fight, unless you get swarmed by Jori’s goons.

Another good option can be the Dried Bouquet, as chances are, even with a summon in play, due to Jori’s ranged strategy and ability to summon multiple enemies, they will probably die before the end of the fight, so this added boost can be enough to see you over the line.

Then, on the subject of spirit ash summons, my personal pick, as is always the case, isMimic Tear Ashes, but due to the need to perform crowd control in an intense scenario, you might want to consider theKaiden Sellsword Ashes

How To Beat Jori, Great Inquisitor

As is the case with almost all fights in the DLC, the game is keen to punish those that summon immediately, and Jori will fire off holy crescent ranged projectiles at you immediately, so take a step left and position behind a gravestone. This will protect you long enough to get your summon off. And, yes, hiding behind gravestones and using the environment is a big part of this fight.

After this, Jori will then use another holy attack, which will cast a series of small AOE tornadoes on your current location. So don’t sit still; instead, make a move to close the gap and get close to them. They will then do one of two things. They will either teleport away from you after a couple of successful hits or try and engage in melee combat.

Their melee combat consists of charged holy attacks that are strong but very slow and labored, so you’ll have ample time to react and get out of the way. When they teleport, however, they become dangerous again, as they will use either a long singular Crescent attack or multiple Crescent projectiles to deal damage. Hide behind gravestones where possible and move towards them when there is a window to do so.

This will continue until they are whittled down to about 50% health. At this point, they will summon a series of minions to attack. These are basic fodder enemies that will go down in 1-2 hits but can be a distraction when you want to focus on Jori. So try to hide behind a gravestone and use this as cover while you aggro them and pick them off.

The only one you really need to worry about is the big round-bellied one that they summon, which can appear in front of you without warning and do a belly-flop attack that hits hard and can make it tough to recover depending on what projectiles are hurtling toward you, so attempt to stay on the move and use cover where possible to get within the vicinity to strike your primary target. Honestly, unless his minions are right in front of you and blocking your way, it’s best to ignore them.

In short, the key to this fight is constantly staying on the move and keeping an eye on what Jori is doing at all times. It’s easy to get distracted and bogged down by his minions, but if you can continually close the gap and force them into melee combat, you’ll see how limited they are at close quarters. Just work on those precise Dodges to avoid his pesky crescent attacks and everything else should fall into place.

Rewards For Beating Jori, Elder Inquisitor

If you manage to defeat Jori, Elder Inquisitor, you will gain the following rewards:

The runes are always welcome, and the new weapon is something to add to the collection. It’s not a weapon that will likely prompt you to respec or swap out your current one any time soon, though. It does decent holy damage and has an interesting Ash of War, but it’s nothing to write home about. The biggest reward here is access to a new and interesting area of the map, and now that you’ve beaten Jori, you’re free to explore. Congrats.
