If you are a fan of watching challenging speedruns ofThe Legend of Zelda, you may have heard of Narcissa Wright. Going back to 2014, Wright became her own ‘legend’ on Twitch through her famous 18:10 run of Ocarina of Time in which she set a new world record and very quickly became a well-known and beloved part of the community.

A short while after, Wright came out as a transgender woman, and in the process of this, she lost a huge part of her online community which unfortunately abandoned her amid her transition. As we know all too well how online spaces can be, Wright was subjected to toxicity as she tried to win back her audience that once was her family. In a new Legend of Zelda documentary that focuses on Wright’s journey through her online life and struggles, director Jane Wagner discusses what drove her to want to make this movie.

Legend of Zelda Director Would Love To “Continue With The Story” If Movie Does Well

Legend of Zelda’s movie director Wes Ball has hopes to keep the story going provided the movie proves to be a hit.

Speaking withKotaku’s Carolyn Petit, Wagner opened up about what was most important about Break the Game and why she felt like she needed to make it. Break the Game follows former Twitch streamer Narcissa Wright, who lived entirely in the virtual world as she speedruns The Legend of Zelda games to her many followers. Coupled with vibrant 8-bit animation and stunning cinematic sequences that look like they have been plucked straight fromBreath of the Wilditself, the movie offers viewers an immersive and intimate look into Narcissa’s world of online streaming and the issues she faced while coming out as transgender.

Wagner says that she came across Narcissa’s story when she fell down a rabbit hole whilst looking for YouTube help on how to beat Wizpig in Diddy Kong Racing on the N64. From there, she found out about Narcissa’s legendary Legend of Zelda videos. “One thing that was really clear when I saw those videos was that Narcissa was beloved by the speedrunning community, and I was really intrigued to find out more about this celebrity of new to me and the subculture of games,” Wagner continues, “I looked her up, about a month after she transitioned, and she was streaming, so I went on her stream and instantly I saw the future of where games were headed.”

Wagner also states that she saw Wright’s vulnerability and knew it was “fertile ground for a documentary”. Pinpointing the online abuse that Wright sustained due to her coming out as transgender, Wagner also highlights that even in the darkest of places, there’s still love and support to be found in these communities. “I didn’t go into the film saying I wanted it to be this way or that way, but I wanted it to be real and nuanced and to show both the beautiful moments of connection and community that can be found in these spaces but unfortunately in Narcissa’s story there was a lot of toxicity, harassment and bullying, and I didn’t want to shy away from that reality.”

She also says that she hopes the documentary can offer a dialogue on how we can have safe social interactions in these online spaces and also that platforms like Twitch should take more accountability so that its creators can have positive experiences and for their mental health to be supported.
