Don’t expect item sets to be part of the initial version of Diablo 4 when it releases as the developer has confirmed they won’t be available at launch.
Diablo 4 Devs Confirm There Won’t Be Item Sets at Launch
Blizzard in the most recent roundtable interview shared that the upcoming Action-RPGDiablo 4won’t be including item sets when itlaunched in June. While fans may be disappointed that item sets won’t be available from the get-go there’s a good reason behind it.
Reasons Behind the Lack of Inclusion at the Launch of Diablo 4
The game’s director Joe Shely explained that the reason behind leaving out item sets at launch was to make sure that they get them right. This means that they will have to be suitable for endgame content and fit with the game’s ecosystem. In the same way that item sets had evolved over time in Diablo 3, Shely hopes the same will happen for Diablo 4.
Implementing item sets in Diablo 4 after launch has its own set of unique challenges. As with other post-launch content additions, the developers must ensure that the item sets fit within the game. They must also make sure that new item sets will keep players engaged but don’t become too powerful and are balanced. The process could be time-consuming, so Blizzard has cautioned people not to expect the update right away. We can expect them in a later update. While the news maybe is disappointing to fans eager to gain them, these sets will take time to build. As for when we will see this added, there doesn’t seem to be a timeline yet.

As we’ve been building the game, we felt like we could evolve sets in a new way relative to what we’ve seen in Diablo 3. But, we needed some more time to get them into the game in a way that would work well with the rest of Diablo 4, so you won’t see sets at launch in the game. We think sets are cool, and we want to do them right – so that’s something we’re looking at for our live service.
Diablo 4 Game Director - Joe Shely
Typically item sets are a collection of powerful items that provide bonuses when used together. These bonuses could range from increased damage output to improved resistances. Developers have cited the time-consuming nature of creating these item sets as the reason why they won’t be available at launch but have promised more content in the future. The same goes for season one not being available at launch, however, this is slated “just a few weeks later”. Item sets could be launched during the firstLadder Season.
Diablo 4 Open Beta
Of course, fans are eagerly awaiting when they can get their hands on the game’s open beta. According to a recent post this month by Diablo’s general manager Rod Fergusson, we should be getting the open beta dates during IGN’s Fan Fest 2023. He hinted that they will be revealing the dates soon “at some sort of gaming moment”. This lines up with the news they’d be attending the event which takes place on February 17th and 18th, so in just a few days' time. Those who want to have access to the open beta will need to pre-purchase the game.
Soon! If only we were presenting at some sort of gaming moment this month where one might announce such a thing…
