Developer The Outer Zone and publisher11 Bit Studioshave announced that Death Howl will receive a new demo forSteamNext Fest. This will be the second build of the game publicly available through Valve’s store, and it’ll be possible to play it from June 9 to June 16 as part of the celebrations of the festival.
A Scandinavian Tale of Grieving
Drawing inspiration from Scandinavian folklore, Death Howl tells the story of Ro, a hunter who comes from a small tribe. She’s overcome with grief after the death of her son and goes on a journey through the realm of the spirits to try to bring him back to life.
9 Things Every Good Soulslike Needs
From Lies of P to Lords of the Fallen, every solid Soulslike will include these iconic mechanics.
The game will take players on a journey reflecting on grief, love and loss. As she faces the spirits, she’ll dive into a dark world that invites her to recollect buried memories and have secrets whispered to her. According to the developers, her story is also a slow path that can lead the protagonist to acceptance.

Along with this dreadful tone, Death Howl brings a unique combination of genres with asoulslikeexperience and deck-building elements. With formidable enemies to face, multiple deck possibilities and non-linear exploration, the game promises a good challenge with its tactical grid-based combat.
First Steps Inside a Mythical Journey
The second Death Howl demo brings a brand-new region to explore compared to the previous one, acting as a direct follow-up for those who played it. Now, players will be able to traverse through the Creek of the Spectral Falls, getting new cards, synergies and tactics.
By the end of the demo, players will get to face one of the Great Spirits. While all enemies are meant to be relentless, this one should be a major boss which will be a significant test of the player’s ability. Considering the game’s soulslike tendencies, players will likely need to have a profound grasp of the mechanics and options at their disposal to figure out how to defeat this creature.

Along with the announcement, the companies have shared a new trailer that shows a bit of the gameplay. Deck-building, world exploration, grid combat, upgrade items and other details are part of the showcase, which also gives us a glimpse of the game’s eerie art style.
Originally announced in January, Death Howl is a passion project from Danish team The Outer Zone. It’s a small group with only three developers, and they spent over four years conceiving the project before revealing it to the public.

Drawing inspiration from Scandinavian folklore, Death Howl tells the story of Ro, a hunter who comes from a small tribe.
Before this game, they had already released the dystopian simulator Mind Scanners and multiple projects onitch.io, including the point-and-click series Tales from The Outer Zone. All of their projects have a hint of surreal elements and a peculiar art style, which is also the case for the new release.

Death Howl is coming to PC through Steam later in 2025, but a specific release date has yet to be announced. It’ll also be possible to get it on GOG for players who prefer to buy their games in alternative DRM-free stores.
