Many believe that Daniel Craig is the best actor to play James Bond sinceSean Connery, though plenty ofRoger Moore,Timothy DaltonandPierce Brosnanfans will argue. There is no denying that he brings a certain weight and reality to007that was lacking in past incarnations of the super spy. But it sounds like Daniel Craig has absolutely nothing in common with this roguelady’s man. He’s not alone,Sean Conneryalso notoriously hated playing Bond. There just must be something that rubs an actor the wrong way about his martini drinking ways.
Sean Connerynever cared for the amount of attention he got for playing James Bond, bailing on the character in 1967 after appearing inYou Only Live Twice. It sounds more and more like Daniel Craig will follow in his footsteps. Though he is contracted for one more movie afterSpectre, the actor has made it clear that he might walk before that happens. Being brutally honest, Daniel Craig had this to say whenRed Bulletinasked if there is anything we can learn from James Bond that would help us in our day-to-day lives.
“Nothing.”
The answer came after a moment of silence. And it came as quite a shock. The question actually opened up an avenue for Daniel Craig to go careening down. He decided to express his exact feelings towards his not-so-beloved on-screen persona. Talking about 007’s skills with the ladies, he had this to say.
“Let’s not forget that he’s actually amisogynist. A lot of women are drawn to him chiefly because he embodies a certain kind of danger and never sticks around for too long.”
Bond producers have never publicly acknowledged that their beloved character is, in fact, a misogynist. Though, that label has been attached to 007 since his inception. While publicists have always tried to shy any misogamy talk away from their upcoming sequels, this is the first time someone directly associated with the franchise has openly discussed the idea with the press. Daniel Craig goes onto to say that only the inclusion of a number of very strong female characters has been James' saving grace in these last few sequels. When it is pointed out that Bond has become more chivalrous, he has this to offer.
“That’s because we’ve surrounded him with very strong women who have no problem putting him in his place.”
The follow up question fromRed Bulletinsuggests that Bond is maturing in his old age. He’s no longer strictly going after women half his junior. In fact, this time out, he is charming an older woman. This doesn’t sit well with Daniel Craig.
“I think you mean the charms of a woman his own age. We’re talking about Monica Bellucci, for heaven’s sake. When someone like that wants to be a Bond girl, you just count yourself lucky!”
Daniel Craig has no problem calling out his character for rarely sleeping with women his own age. It seems he has a lot of bridges to burn. And it has many speculating that he’s done with 007. Though, the actor still refuses to admit that outright. It should be noted that the actor spends the rest of his interview withRed Bulletinbeing very thoughtful. It’s clear that he has some issues with James Bond, and the character clearly wasn’t made for these more socially aware times. What do you think of Daniel Craig’s outspoken ways? Do you agree with him? Or do you want him to shut up so you can enjoy the movie when it hits the big screen this November? You can read the rest of the interviewhere.
