The vast majority of MCU movies have been overwhelming hits, both with critics and at the box office. But a franchise that has been running for nearly two decades was always bound to have a couple of stinkers, and one of the worst MCU movies arrived in theaters in 2022.Thor: Love & ThunderbroughtChris Hemsworthback for a fourth standalone outing as Thor, following the fan favorite,Thor: Ragnarök. Thor has always had a tough time in his standalone projects, withThorbeing entirely forgettable, andThor: The Dark Worldlong being considered the MCU’s weakest movie (until Phase 5, that is). ButLove & Thunderset the bar even lower than before, thanks to a myriad of questionable creative decisions, and potentially killed the chances ofThor 5in the process. Thankfully, the God of Thunder might be getting the redemption he sorely needs inAvengers: Doomsday.

The rumor comes to us via The Town with Matthew Belloni podcast, which has shed some (rumored) new light on the MCU’s future. In the podcast’s latest episode, Belloni revealed a big detail aboutAvengers: Doomsday’s plot. The overarching story remains a closely veiled mystery at Marvel Studios, but fans now know who could be(co)leading the Avengers in their missionto stop Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.). Belloni claimed that Chris Hemsworth’s Thor will be the “second lead” inAvengers: Doomsday.

Everything We Know About ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

There aren’t many details about the upcoming movie, but fans should be excited about the confirmed cast.

The rumor has some backing, as Chris Hemsworth’s was the first name revealed in the overly longAvengers: Doomsdaycast announcement live-stream back in April. Thor is also one of the most recognizable MCU heroes, and one of the few members of the franchise’s old guard left in the long-running cinematic universe. However, the above should still be treated as a rumor. Marvel Studios hasn’t revealed any plot details aboutAvengers: Doomsdayyet. The entire film’s production is also closely guarded, except for that one guy who broke onto the film’s set in London.

Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man in Avengers

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Releases Next December

Avengers: Doomsday, theMCU’s replacement for the canceledAvengers: Kang Dynasty, was announced at San Diego Comic Con in 2024. Robert Downey Jr. took to the stage in full Doctor Doom attire, and the reveal caused shockwaves among the fan base. The internet lost its collective mind over whether Downey Jr. returning to play a new character was a good or bad decision, and many still haven’t made up their minds.

But, unlike many of Marvel Studios' past announcements (We’re looking at you,Blade),Avengers: Doomsdayis actually happening. The film is currently in production in London. 26 actors, including Downey Jr., have been officially cast in the movie, although many fans believe that the first wave of casting was just the beginning. However, we likely won’t learn more until filming has wrapped.Avengers: Doomsdaywas initially slated for releasenext May. However, its release date was pushed back several months. The film now opens in theaters on July 08, 2025.
